Best Over the Ear Headphones Wireless headphones allow you to listen to music and podcasts without the requirement of connecting a wire to your audio device. They're ideal for public transport, while at work or at home. Wireless over-ear headphones may have a premium design and exceptional noise cancellation. Soundcore Q30 A major improvement over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018, these over-ears are more attractive, feel more durable, and are generally more polished. The hinges are tighter and the soft leather ear cups have been a bit larger. They're still made of plastic, but they're more polished. You can also swap out the 3.5mm cable for a premium USB-C version to connect them to portable Hi-Fi systems as well as stationary Hi-Res players. They also feature dual microphones that are great in our tests for FaceTime, Skype, and Microsoft Teams calls. The Soundcore app offers a vast range of EQ presets that can be adjusted and saved so you can listen to music or podcasts in the style you prefer. This is the thing that sets these headphones apart from most other ANC headphones and the Soundcore app is extremely simple to use. The Q30's 40mm speaker effectively block the majority of ambient noise when ANC is enabled. This makes for an extremely enjoyable listening experience. The Q30's sound quality is natural, but it is a bit the treble. Some may be disappointed by the bass response (we have had better results with the Bass Booster EQ). However, you can easily fix this with the Soundcore application, as there is an 8-band equalizer to allow you to tweak. The left earcup has the power button and a pairing button and an USB-C charging port. The right ear cup has play/pause, and volume up/down buttons. Double-clicking on these buttons allows you to skip tracks or replay previous ones. You can also use voice commands to ask them to change modes or set alarms. You can also cover the right earcup with your fingers to activate ambient modes so that you can hear the world around you without having to remove the headphones. The battery life on these headphones is excellent and the battery life is also excellent. In our tests with ANC enabled the Q30 was able to last for nearly an hour longer than the other headphones. This gives you plenty of time for a long flight or a day at the office. They can be easily recharged using the USB-C cable included and you'll get a warning when they're approaching empty. Focal Bathys Wireless Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of powerful over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offers both active noise cancellation and Bluetooth playback. These headphones are designed to be high-end, premium headphones that can be used at home or on the go. They're a little more expensive than other similar headphones but their superior sound quality is the main selling point. The Focal Bathys are packaged in a compact elegant white box with a fabric finish. It contains all the accessories that you will need. You can also get a fold-flat carry case for the headphones as well as a USB-C to USB C cable, 1.2mmSE cable and an audio converter. They're powered by a good 600mAh battery that can take you through a full day of casual listening and also have an audio input that can be wired for use. Wirelessly, they're paired via Bluetooth. You can control their functions with an app (now named Focal and Naim in keeping with English Naim's network-aware products) or the dedicated button on the left earcup that scrolls through ANC profiles like'silent','soft transparent,' and 'full. The app allows you to alter different settings such as the brightness of the LED, EQ presets including a'music profile' that sounds brighter and more neutral than the others and their battery life. It also allows you to select the ANC mode and the level, and also set an 'acoustic environment' that will adjust the sensitivity of your music to simulate how it would sound like when used in a space with different soundproofing. The Focal Bathys come with an incredibly bass-rich sound that adds more punch and warmth to your favourite tracks. The result is that instruments and vocals be muted, while other certain elements like cymbals could be less prominent than on other headphones. The headphones are also less effective at active noise cancellation when compared with other headphones that feature higher-end technology, like the Sony WH1000XM5 and Apple AirPods Max. Sony WH-1000XM5 Sony headphones are known for their quality and the WH1000XM5 is no exception. It is at the top portion of the headphones for over-ear, and is slipping into the 'luxury lifestyle' category where brands like Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc hang out. The XM5s are expensive in price tag, but when you can afford it, there are a few better wireless over-ear headphones available. The XM5s have a lot of features that make life easier for the listener, and also automate tasks they would otherwise need to perform manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near-high resolution) is available and also support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This allows for streaming of high-quality audio at bitrates higher than conventional Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone that can be used for making hands-free calls. Similar to the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel in noise cancellation. These headphones are among the best at cutting down on the constant drones that can be heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s are also great at isolating the listener from the hum of busy streets and airports. The sound quality is excellent. The XM5s lack as much detail in the low-frequency range as the XM4, but, they do have a greater sense clarity and openness. For instance the bass work on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys' muscles with real force and definition without flattening the other elements. The XM5s are also able to deliver precise and tight bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel. The battery life is also good, providing up to 30 hours of listening with ANC active and 40 hours when it's turned off. This is plenty for a weekend trip or a long period of usage. The only real drawback here is that the XM5s do not have any dust or water resistance protection. Sony recommends not sweating into them or taking them out in the rain. This may not be a problem for many people, but it might cause a problem for anyone considering the XM5s who spend a lot of time at the gym or lives in a city with rain. Apple AirPods Max Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones that come with Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. Apple designed dynamic drivers measuring 40mm with a neutral audio profile that focuses on highs and mids, but not going overboard. This makes them great for movies and music. They also offer better sound quality when compared with other headphones. The headphones are light and feel comfortable on your head. The ear cups are constructed of memory foam and covered with woven fabric, fit comfortably over the ears, do not put pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups can also be flipped and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The hinges that are spring loaded have a strong but not too powerful clamping force, which makes sure that the ear cups stay in place during listening sessions. A small button on the the right earcup can be used to toggle noise cancellation modes. You can also utilize the jog dial that is a push-button similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it to control the volume and press it one three, twice, or times for playback controls. Siri is invoked by pressing and pressing the button. best on-ear headphones wireless are simple to use and are well-placed, but I would have liked to see the power button that could shut off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode when removed from your ear or placed in their case. They only come back on when you put them on your head again. Spatial audio is another great feature. It utilizes gyroscopes, accelerometers, and iPads or iPhones to determine where you are moving. Then, it alters the position of the sound so that they appear to come from that particular location. This creates an immersive theater experience for movies and videos recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only catch is that spatial audio requires an iOS device for use, and you won't be able enjoy it on other devices. The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd be slightly smug about walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew that they'd be outdone next year by the new model. AirPods Pro are more expensive however they offer more battery life and are equipped with the latest features.
